Fiona Montgomery – freelance journalist and writer

Brief update, 30 Dec 2025:

This website is still under construction, but hopefully I will be able to do more here in 2026!

Thanks,

Fiona

Still under construction – Full update later in 2026.

About me: I recently retired from my job with a trade union. I am a former political reporter/reporter/leader writer at the Evening Times and have taught news reporting at Napier University. I am not currently working as a freelance journalist.

My writing.

Following a break from writing, I will be refocusing in 2022 on completing my memoir, a large portion of which was the portfolio for my MLitt in Creative Writing at Glasgow University. In February 2019 I was awarded an Older Writers Bursary from Luminate and the Saltire Society for critique and mentoring to help me complete the memoir.

Extracts were published in Gutter 05, Freight 2011. A short memoir piece, The Logic of Blue Pyjamas, was published in the Fish Anthology 2018 launched at West Cork Literary Festival on Monday 16 July 2018. It was one of the ten winners of the Fish Short Memoir Prize 2018. See the Fish Publishing site for a report and photos from the launch. The anthology is on sale here at Fish Publishing.

Another related piece of writing, Asked What Saved Her Life, She Said, ‘The Books, The Books’, was published in a MAP Magazine and Essay Catalyst Conversations essay collection, in May 2018. Details of the launch at the CCA in Glasgow here. The book, titled Do Not Make The, is available by emailing MAP  info@mapmagazine.co.uk  for £6 plus P&P. Also available from @AyeAyebooks in the CCA.

My book reviews have been published in the Scottish Review of Books and Gutter. The latest was in Gutter 16 (of Dirt Road, by James Kelman), with earlier reviews in Gutter 15 (of The Outrun, by Amy Liptrot)  and 13 (of Jellyfish, by Janice Galloway).
